University of Florida Finds Positive Link Between California PBIS Recognition and Student Outcomes

With schools returning to and/or increasing in-person instruction, they must find ways to keep students engaged and in the learning environment. In 2020, researchers from the University of Florida, along with collaborators from California PBIS, published a peer-reviewed study on the impacts of PBIS on student outcomes in California schools participating in the state recognition  system titled “The Effect of School-Wide Positive Behavior Interventions and Supports on Disciplinary Exclusions: A Conceptual Replication”. These findings are especially relevant as California’s schools continue to double-down on their efforts to support the social-emotional and behavioral wellness of their students and provide support during the most complex time for schools and their students in recent memory.

This study extends and supports findings that were originally published in July of 2019. That article, “Effect of SWPBIS on Disciplinary Exclusions for Students With and Without Disabilities” again, published by researchers from the University of Florida, found that California schools implementing Tier 1 PBIS demonstrated improved outcomes when compared to matched schools that were not implementing PBIS.
